WHAT IS RESPIRATOR FIT TESTING?
Respirator Fit testing, commonly known as a mask fit test or facial fit test, is a way to determine if an adequate seal is achieved on the wearer, of their chosen respiratory protective device (RPD).
Without an adequate seal on tight fitting respirators, the wearer is still exposed to the environment around them, which in some circumstances can lead to adverse health effects.
It is important to resolve any facial fit barriers and ensure the worker that is wearing the mask, is given adequate protection.
HOW IS A RESPIRATOR FIT TEST DONE?
There are several ways in which you can perform respirator fit testing.
Qualitative Method (QLFT) performed using a challenge agent in a controlled hood. A pass/fail result relies on the wearer’s ability to taste or smell the test agent, to determine if a seal is achieved on disposable and half face reusable respirators.
Quantitative Method (QNFT) performed using a type of machine, either a
At Onsite Safety Australia, we use the QNFT Quantitative fit testing method, using the latest model 8048 Portacount (CNC) Machine.
We have several machines utilized at our Technical Showroom in Banksmeadow, and by our mobile fit testing team.
HOW DOES FIT TESTING WORK?
Fit testing works by measuring the number of microscopic particles in the ambient air and then measuring the number of those particles that leak into the respirator.
The ratio of these two concentrations is called the fit factor.
Fit testing is done while the person is wearing the respirator and attached to the testing unit. They are then instructed to perform several physical movements and actions, designed to challenge how the seal is maintained in a relevant emulation of its intended use.
If an adequate seal is achieved and you pass a fit test, that respirator is deemed a suitable match for the wearer.
HOW LONG DOES A FIT TEST GO FOR?
Respirator Fit Testing is a painless, fast, and easy to follow process. Using the latest technology machines, we instruct you through the test with clear prompts, animated cues & experienced fit test operators to guide you through the fit
It will take approximately 15 minutes of your time, which includes;
WHO NEEDS TO GET A FIT TEST?
Anyone wearing a tight-fitting respirator should be fit tested
This is governed by Australian Standards 1715:2009, which states that wearers of tight-fitting respirators (including disposables, reusable half face and full face) should be fit tested before wearing a mask for the first time and subsequently every 12 months thereafter.
This includes being fit tested in every style, size, or brand variance, to ensure it offers the wearer adequate protection.
WHAT DO I NEED FOR A FIT TEST?
To prepare for a fit test, there are a few key points you should note.
Know what mask you need to be fit tested in.
* Please liaise with your site as to their specific requirements.
* Advise us which mask it is prior to booking.
* Advise us if you need to purchase a mask or you will bring it to the fit test
We supply a range of RPE, including disposable, half face and full-face respirators in a variety of sizes and styles.

Be Clean shaven
* No fit test will be performed unless there is no facial hair lying between
the skin, and the mask being worn. * We can supply a shaving kit if required at
an additional cost
No smoking half hour prior to the test
* This is to ensure you do not fail unnecessarily.
* Please advise us on the day of the booking if we need to delay.
Bring ID with you
* For audit purposes and ensuring your fit test reports are correct.
WHAT WILL I RECEIVE ONCE THE FIT TEST IS COMPLETE?
Once you have achieved an adequate seal and you pass a fit test, that respirator is deemed a suitable match.
An official Respirator Fit Test Report is generated, and the PDF can be printed or emailed to you.
We also offer a personal Respirator Fit Test Card if requested.
WHERE CAN I GET FIT TESTED?
We offer fit testing at our Technical showroom in Banksmeadow, or for large groups we offer the use of our mobile fit testing team who can come to you.
CAN YOU DO FIT TESTING AT MY WORKPLACE?
Yes! For groups of 10 or more people, we can send out one (or more) of our expert mobile fit testers to a place convenient to you. This has included in the past; construction sites, lunchrooms, first aid rooms, hospitals, education centers, boardrooms, and warehouses.
All that is needed is a table, chairs, and access to power. We carry everything else that is required for the fit testing process including the machine, consumables, and adaptors. We can even bring with us a range of respirators if requested prior.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BEING FIT TESTED?
With every fit test for you or your employees, we offer the following;
WHAT IS RESP-FIT?
Resp-Fit is the first national accreditation program for fit testing. It was developed by the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygiene (AIOH) through close collaboration with many industry stakeholders including State & Territory Regulators, RPE Manufacturers & industry, workers & members of the AIOH.
Onsite Safety Australia is a proud supporter of Resp-Fit and our staff follow the Resp-Fit guidelines with our respirator fit testing for a uniformed approach to fit testing.
DO YOU SUPPLY FIT TESTING PRODUCTS?
