Respirator Fit testing, also known as a mask fit test, a facial fit test, or an RFT, is a way to determine if an adequate seal is achieved on the wearer of their chosen respiratory protective device (RPD).
Without an adequate seal on tight fitting respirators, the wearer is still exposed to the environment around them, which in some circumstances can lead to adverse health effects. Respiratory Fit Testing is required by law under Australian Standards AUNZS 1716:2009 We perform Fit testing in our Technical showroom in Banksmeadow (use the book now button). Alternatively, if you have larger groups of staff needing fit testing, you can utilise our Mobile RFT team, who can come to a site or location suitable to you.
We have performed many fit tests at locations including lunchrooms and first aid sheds on construction sites, warehouses, offices, medical facilities, laboratories, and university campuses. For more information, check the FAQ’s below, or reach out to us today.

There are several ways in which you can perform respirator fit testing.
Qualitative Method (QLFT) performed using a challenge agent in a controlled hood. A pass/fail result relies on the wearer’s ability to taste or smell the test agent, to determine if a seal is achieved on disposable and half face reusable respirators.
Quantitative Method (QNFT) performed using a type of machine, either a
At Onsite Safety Australia, we use the QNFT Quantitative fit testing method, using the latest model 8048 Portacount (CNC) Machine.
We have several machines utilized at our Technical Showroom in Banksmeadow, and by our mobile fit testing team.
Fit testing works by measuring the number of microscopic particles in the ambient air and then measuring the number of those particles that leak into the respirator.
The ratio of these two concentrations is called the fit factor.
Fit testing is done while the person is wearing the respirator and attached to the testing unit. They are then instructed to perform several physical movements and actions, designed to challenge how the seal is maintained in a relevant emulation of its intended use.
If an adequate seal is achieved and you pass a fit test, that respirator is deemed a suitable match for the wearer.
Respirator Fit Testing is a painless, fast, and easy to follow process. Using the latest technology machines, we instruct you through the test with clear prompts, animated cues & experienced fit test operators to guide you through the fit test.
It will take approximately 15 minutes of your time, which includes;
Anyone wearing a tight-fitting respirator should be fit tested
This is governed by Australian Standards 1715:2009, which states that wearers of tight-fitting respirators (including disposables, reusable half face and full face) should be fit tested before wearing a mask for the first time and subsequently every 12 months thereafter.
This includes being fit tested in every style, size, or brand variance, to ensure it offers the wearer adequate protection.
To prepare for a fit test, there are a few key points you should note.

It was developed by the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygiene (AIOH) through close collaboration with many industry stakeholders including State & Territory Regulators, RPE Manufacturers & industry, workers & members of the AIOH.
Onsite Safety Australia is a proud supporter of Resp-Fit and our staff follow the Resp-Fit guidelines with our respirator fit testing for a uniformed approach to fit testing.
